I received Bob Mould’s new autobiography for Father’s Day last week. Since Christmas it seems everything I’ve read has had something to do with Husker Du. Michael Azerrad’s Our Band Could Be Your Life kicked off the trend. From there I moved on to Andrew Earles’ incomplete, yet nonetheless interesting Husker Du - The Story of the Noise Pop Pioneers Who Launched Modern Rock. Mould’s biography which features help from Azerrad should be the bookend to my self-taught 6 month course in Husker Du-ology.
I’m three chapters in as of this writing and so far, so good. No major revelations yet, but Mould does not shy away from how his sexuality has informed his life decisions, something that Earles’ book smartly shied away from, considering Mould was not involved in the research and writing of that book.
Reading this book inspired me to finally make this mix featuring the bands profiled in Azerrad’s wonderful book Our Band Could Be Your Life. I’m not sure why it took me almost ten years from its publishing to finally read it. I encourage you to pick up a copy, or borrow mine…if you haven’t read it. You know, just give it back when you’re done. This book is staying on my shelves so I can hand it to my daughter when the time is right.
